Bisnow Interviews Jerrold Bregman on Colorado Bill Aiming to Ban Landlords from Using Algorithmic Rent-Setting Software
Jerrold Bregman recently spoke to Bisnow about Colorado’s House Bill 25-1004, which would effectively bar landlords from utilizing algorithmic devices that pull from private data to determine rent pricing under the guise of the state’s antitrust laws.
Jerry tells Bisnow that the intersection of tech and coordinated pricing is at the core of this bill, explaining that if each unit is rightly priced, “equilibrium will be met.”
However, he continues that while the bill is well-intentioned, collusion is already illegal. He elaborates that although transparency is essential, HB 25-1004 is also a smart political move for legislators sponsoring the bill looking to take a stand against big tech companies.
“Politics can’t be ignored,” Jerry adds. “I think there’s some political currency to be gained to be seen as attacking big business and trying to rein in predatory activity.”
